A Captivating Story “Trampled, but Alive: What Do the Surviving Posters Tell About Life in the Vilnius Ghetto?”

The Central State Archives of Lithuania is launching a new series of engaging stories dedicated to documents preserved in the archive and included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme.

The first story in the series tells about the cultural life of the Vilnius Jewish Ghetto during World War II. It presents the ghetto posters preserved in the archive, testifying to people’s efforts to preserve culture, community and human dignity in the face of constant fear, loss and uncertainty.

The posters of the Vilnius Jewish Ghetto preserved in the archive today are unique testimonies of the past. They open a window into life at that time and remind us that the cultural life of the ghetto became not only a source of spiritual strength, but also a form of moral resistance. In 2007, the posters of the Vilnius Ghetto were recognized as documents of regional significance and included in the Lithuanian National Register of the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme.
