A person could get acquainted himself with the documents in the archives’ reading rooms or submitting a written request. Archives provide paid services relating to the search for documents. In order to start the search, as far as all known information must be provided. Information to get started could be: full names (including maiden name), date and place of birth, marriage or death (though approximate), determined residential town, village or other areas and addresses.
Archives will provide information about service fees and terms as soon as possible.
Reading rooms
There are reference rooms in each Archives. The researchers observing the regulations have the possibility directly to become acquainted with the documents.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK PROCEDURE IN STATE ARCHIVES READING ROOMS
Services
Services of reading rooms:
- Reading rooms provide access to inventory lists, indexes, descriptions, catalogs, and reference books.
- Consultations of experienced archivists are available here, too.
- The information search systems are created for helping to find documents.
Other services:
- The State Archives provides advice for institutions and organizations regarding the organization of document management and preservation of documents; they also handle inquiries of institutions and individuals.
- On the user's request, photocopies and microfilm copies of documents can be made.
- Professional restoration of documents.
- Educational excursions and exhibitions of documents are organized in the archives for the public.
- At the request, the archives give official certificates about the birth, marriage, and death of persons, estate, record of service and other legal status facts.
Also, Lithuanian archivists, displaying the historical sources for the society, are compiling collections of various documents, preparing monographs, writing articles and making publications.

The Archives examines social legal inquiries and on the basis of the stored documents issues archive certificates on citizens' real estate ownership, citizenship, family composition, arrival from Russia for work during the war years, deportation to Germany for work, imprisonment in the ghettos of Vilnius, Kaunas and Šiauliai, as well as on the length of service (before 1940), education, service in the military and the police.
The archive makes analogue and digital copies of documents, restores audio and photographic documents by computer, restores, microfilms, copies, binds files. The work is carried out for state archives and other institutions.
Document restoration, microfilming and file binding using technologies and materials compliant with European standards.
The services provided by the Archives for document retrieval, research and copying are subject to payment in accordance with the approved list of services and fees payable by the State Archives.
